WHAT'S HAPPENING
THE CAMDEN BATTLEFIELD
The Battle of Camden battlefield is one of the most important Revolutionary War battlefields in the United States. It has been written off as a great patriot defeat marred by cowardice of the commanding General and an untested militia that broke and ran within the first 5-minutes of battle.
When in fact it was just the opposite for the brave men of the Continental Army who stood their ground, out numbered 3 to 1 for more than an hour proving that they were a force to be reckoned with. The battle resulted in 37 percent of all patriot battlefield casualties suffered in 1780. And the demise of the Old Maryland Line as a large fighting force.
The Battle of Camden
On August 16, 1780 roughly 8 miles outside of Camden on the Great Wagon Road Gen. Gates of the Continental Army was soundly defeated by Gen. Cornwallis of the British Army. Resulting in the defeat but not the loss of the Continental Army in the south.
The Fourteen
Fourteen soldiers were exhumed from the Camden battlefield twelve where Continental soldiers. One a Loyalist Militiamen and the fourteenth a 71st Fraser Highlander. They were rendered full military honors and have been reinterred at the Old Presbyterian Graveyard.
Interpreting the Battlefield
We have broken ground on a new informational pavilion and parking area adjacent to the Voices of Camden. And are reinterpreting our trail signage to be more inclusive and to more accurately reflect our ongoing archaeological work.
