Job Title: Gift Shop Volunteer

Time Commitment:

Three hours per shift (10 am - 1pm or 1pm - 4pm), hours available Tuesday thru Friday

Duties:

Greet visitors, give visitors site map & overview of what they can do while on the site, answer visitors' questions, make shop sales, do projects given by staff, answer the telephone & take messages (on occasion)

Qualifications:

Good customer service skills; outgoing personality; some knowledge of area history; some knowledge of other local attractions, restaurants, & hotels; able to work independently; able to ask staff any questions; pleasant phone voice; able to take messages; friendly demeanor

Importance of the Job to Historic Camden's Purpose:

The Gift Shop is usually the first place tourists will visit when coming into Camden and while on the site.  One of the visitor's first impressions will be from site representatives in the shop.  Shop volunteers are important to Historic Camden because they educate the public about the Camden area and its history.  Shop volunteers are also essential in helping our small staff accomplish many important office duties.

 

Job Title: Docent/Tour Guide

Time Commitment:

2 hour per day (Tuesday - Friday) for regular guided tours scheduled at 10:30 a.m. &2:30 p.m.; school & group tours (depending on size) are usually scheduled between 9:00 a.m. – 1:00PM.

Duties:

Be able to give regular guided tours, school & group tours:  brief orientation of site, video, and a working knowledge of Craven, McCaa, and Kershaw Houses.

Qualifications:

Good customer service skills; know or be willing to learn about Camden & its importance in colonial & Revolutionary War history; willing to learn about history of the site buildings, their interiors, & furnishings; able to speak loudly and clearly; know or learn how to handle large groups; must be able to give school tours to all ages of children; friendly demeanor

Importance of Docent /Tour Guide:

Education through guided tours is one of the main goals of Historic Camden. Docents will provide a major community service by educating the public on Camden & its unique history. In addition, docents will give a small staff more time to pursue other duties and obligations. Docents will also assure the public that there are always tours available at Historic Camden, and they will help the site to be perceived as a major tour attraction in Kershaw County and the Midlands of South Carolina.

Job Title: Volunteer Coordinator

Time Commitment:

 One day a week, minimum four hours.

Duties:

Recruit & help interview & train shop volunteers; help recruit & interview docents; schedule shop volunteers & docents each month; oversee volunteers & docents; report problems/concerns/questions to staff; assist staff in recruiting volunteers for special events & projects; assist staff in planning special events to thank volunteers for their services

Qualifications:

Customer service skills; must be organized; must be willing to meet people in community; must be comfortable in overseeing other people; must have pleasant phone voice; must know or be willing to learn about Historic Camden & Camden's history; friendly demeanor

Importance of Volunteer Coordinator:

A volunteer coordinator will be helpful in scheduling volunteers, which are an important asset to the site.  A volunteer coordinator will serve as a liaison between the staff and the volunteers.  A coordinator will also greatly reduce the staff's time in recruiting and scheduling volunteers.

 

Job Title: Special Events Volunteer

Time Commitment:

Shifts scheduled as needed

Duties:

Sell tickets & take money; sell concessions or run gift shop; assist with set-up or clean-up of events; duties will vary depending on the event.

Qualifications:

Customer service skills; must be organized; must be able to handle large crowds; friendly demeanor; may be asked to lift items up to 30 pounds

Importance of Special Events Volunteer:

Special Events Volunteers will assist in overseeing all aspects of our events.

 

Job Title: Demonstrator/Interpreter

Time Commitment:

Shifts scheduled as needed; some special events

Duties:

Provide 18th century or other historical demonstrations or interpretations; volunteers can choose from a variety of topics.  Volunteers, with the help of the staff, can create their own program and methods for presenting the material. Volunteers can have fun researching the information needed for their demonstrations/interpretations.

Qualifications:

Customer service skills; must know or be willing to learn about Camden’s history & 18th century life; must be able to adequately research topics & ask staff for help when needed; must be willing to travel to other historic sites to learn about their existing programs; must have an outgoing personality; must work well with the public, especially school children; friendly demeanor

Importance of Demonstrator/Interpreter:

Interpreters/Demonstrators will help the main goal of the site - education.  These volunteers will not only help with school and group tours but will also extend Historic Camden’s programs with community outreach.

 

Job Title: Administrative Volunteer

Time Commitment:

Shifts scheduled as needed, usually up to three hours; some special projects

Duties:

Assist HC office staff with various administrative and organizational projects.

Qualifications:

Ability to use computers; organized; previous office experience preferred; ability to work independently

Importance of Demonstrator/Interpreter:

With such a small staff, Historic Camden often needs help with various special projects. Some of them may be as small as organizing and weeding files, others may be larger membership or event organization projects.
