Penny rugs were originally created from discarded scraps of felted wool. Using pennies and other coins as templates the wool felt was cut into circles. Each circle was then stitched to a wool backing in a pleasing design with decorative stitch embellishments.
Most often the designs were made by artfully arranging circles in varying colors and sizes although some did include images from everyday life such as cats, flowers, birds and shapes such as stars and hearts. These penny rugs were not traditionally made as actual rugs for the floor, but rather they were used as decorative coverings for beds, tables, pillows or wall hangings.
