THE FOURTEEN THAT REPRESENT ALL WHO FELL AT THE BATTLE OF CAMDEN

The two brigades of Maryland Continentals suffered the most. All told, including officers, noncommissioned officers, musicians like drummer boys and fifers who were as young as 13 or 14, and privates, they counted more than 800 killed, captured, missing. Some of the dead were left out in the open. Others were buried in shallow graves where they fell, and in at least one instance, American soldiers were mixed with soldiers from the British army. Twelve soldiers from Maryland, several as young as 15 years old, were buried next to a North Carolina loyalist militiaman and one of Fraser’s Highlanders.
